Being SunSmart

Enjoy the sun safely

When the good weather starts, it's the perfect excuse to enjoy the outdoors – but make sure you enjoy the sun safely by taking steps to prevent sunburn.

Reduce your skin cancer risk

Skin cancer is one of the most common cancers in the UK and the number of people who develop it is increasing.

Most skin cancers are caused by too much ultraviolet (UV) radiation, which is given off by the sun and sunbeds.

Sunburn is a sign that UV radiation has damaged the DNA in your skin cells. Damaged DNA can mean that cells start growing out of control and this can lead to skin cancer. Getting a painful sunburn just once every two years can triple the risk of melanoma, the most serious type of skin cancer.

So it's important not to let sunburn catch you out. Use shade, clothing and at least SPF15 sunscreen to protect yourself from sunburn.

People with fair skin that burns easily, red or fair hair, lots of moles or freckles, or a personal history of skin cancer are at increased risk of developing skin cancer and need to take extra care to protect themselves from sunburn.

Exercising in the sun

The sun's UV rays are strongest around midday. If you're exercising outdoors on sunny days, try to keep your shoulders covered with cool, loose clothing like a T-shirt, and wear a hat and sunglasses. You can use sunscreen (SPF15+) on any skin that's not covered and apply it generously and regularly.

Try to plan your Race for Life preparation to avoid being out for long periods in summer, especially around midday.

If you are out in the sun don't forget to drink plenty of water to rehydrate.

Make sure your friends and family who've come to support you on the day have all they need to enjoy the sun safely and not get sunburnt. If you're planning to make a day of it, spend some time in the shade between 11.00am and 3.00pm.
