Training
Ways to train whatever your fitness level
Race for Life is not a competitive event. It’s about women of
all ages and fitness levels coming together to raise money to help to beat cancer.
Some women don’t do any training for their Race for Life event,
but it is healthier and safer to do some exercise before the
day.
Here are some top tips to help you prepare:
1. Make sure you have a comfortable pair of trainers that give
your feet good support and wear a good sports bra.
2. Beginners should concentrate on increasing the time you
exercise for rather than distance you cover and build up
gradually.
3. Whether you choose to walk, jog or run, go at a
conversational pace. You should be able to complete full sentences
and if you can’t, you are going too fast.
4. Remember to warm up and cool down before and after any
exercise. Taking time to stretch properly will help reduce chances
of injury.
5. It’s important to drink before, during and after exercise.
Waiting until you are thirsty is not advisable, as you will be
dehydrated.
6. Set a training goal for yourself and make sure it’s
achievable.
7. Keep an exercise log – it’s an excellent way to track your
progress and a great motivator.
8. Exercise with friends. Having a group of other people to
train with on a regular basis will help to keep you motivated and
ensure your safety. It’s also just more fun than training
alone.
9. Be safe. Tell someone where you're going and when you expect
to return. Take ID with you and wear reflective clothing if you’re
exercising at night.
10. Make sure you get plenty of rest and don’t drink too much
alcohol the night before. Arrive at least an hour early to your Race for Life event and give yourself plenty
of time to take part in the warm-up and soak up the amazing
atmosphere.
How far is 5k?
It may not be as far as you think. See what 5k equates to on some everyday routes
that cover the same distance.
Take on the 10k challenge
If you're ready to take up a challenge to double your distance,
there is a 10k option available at selected Race for Life events
across the UK. Find out if there is
a Race for Life 10k event near you.
If you are taking part in a 10k event, it is highly recommended
that you do train.
Important note: we advise you to check with your doctor before
starting any type of exercise programme. If you, or any member of
your family have diabetes, high/low blood pressure, a history of
heart disease or high cholesterol, you must obtain clearance from
your doctor.
